AERAP workshop on Infrastructure Investment and Technology Development - 14-11-2012

General Info

Start date:2012-11-14

End date:

The third in the series of AERAP stakeholders workshops, convened to support the implementation of the European Parliament’s Written Declaration 45/2011 on “Science Capacity Building in Africa: promoting European-African Radio Astronomy Partnerships” will be held on Brussels on 14th of November 2012. The workshop will focus on “Infrastructure Investment and Technology Development including Scientific Instrumentation for Radio Astronomy” and will be followed by an AERAP dinner.

The AERAP workshop on the 14th of November will during its first segment focus on available instruments to support investment in radio astronomy infrastructures in Africa of interest to Europe and explore the possibilities for African and European partners to collaborate on these. Research infrastructures are a crucial factor for science capacity building and thus socio-economic development on the African continent. Africa is also well placed to host research infrastructures, especially for radio astronomy, which can benefit European science. A good example in this regard, which has raised significant excitement in Europe, is the proposed African VLBI Network. The second part of the workshop will be dedicated to opportunities and funding instruments for Africa-EU cooperation with regard to technology development including scientific instrumentation for radio astronomy. In the evening, a dinner will provide an ideal framework for informal engagement between policy-makers and stakeholders.

This workshop will be followed by a presentation of the AERAP Progress Report and Launch of the European Parliament’s AERAP Group in the European Parliament on the 15th of November 2012. For further information about this event, please click here.

Furthermore, for European stakeholders interested, AERAP can also arrange bilateral meetings with Members of the European Parliament representing stakeholders’ constituencies in their home countries. Please contact us (aerap@aerap.org) if you are interested in such meetings with MEPs to discuss directly which support the European Parliament can provide to advance African-European cooperation in your specific fields of interest.
