In January 2008 the International Astronomical Union (IAU) set out to develop a visionary decadal strategic plan entitled “Astronomy for the Developing World”. At the heart of the implementation of this plan is the creation of a central coordinating “Office of Astronomy for Development” (OAD). The IAU Strategic Plan envisages that a number of regional nodes will be established gradually throughout the decade, supported mainly by external funds, such as in-kind contributions by the host organisations. The OAD will work towards establishing such regional nodes across the world.
The OAD has recently announced the opportunity to host regional nodes. Details of the announcement can be found here
Those who would like to know more about what took place at the OAD stakeholder meeting in December can find further information here
Coordination is provided by ISC Intelligence in Science as one of the initiators of AERAP, together with the South African Mission to the EU.
